CURRICULUMS
When deciding upon a curriculum for your student, there are a few items to consider,
Do you want to teach with workbooks or use online learning?
Do you want a secular based curriculum or a religious one?
What is your teaching style and what is your child's learning style?
What is your family's budget for homeschooling?
If your child was previously enrolled in Public School, you may want to allow your child a chance to
"de-school." This involves giving your child a break from any type of instruction to separate themselves
from traditional school routines and expectations. This time will hopefully allow your child to rediscover
the joy of learning and gain more interest and support for homeschooling. Remember, we're not trying to mimic Public School at home. We can be much more flexible with lessons, routines, and schedules,
that's some of the freedom that comes with homeschooling!
When selecting a curriculum, no curriculum is one size fits all.
You can use one program for Language Arts and a different one for Math.
You can use one program for one child and a completely different program for another child!
You can even change curriculums in the middle of the school year if you discover it's not the best fit for your child. It's not even the end of the world if your child doesn't complete 100% of the curriculum at the end of the school year as next year's curriculum should start off with a review to cover most of those final lessons.
If your child is mastering the learning material so well that they're becoming bored and losing interest -
jump ahead in their lessons to keep them engaged. If your child is struggling to learn new material - slow down and add some extra practices in to help your child fully grasp the new concepts being taught. If your child (or a sibling or caregiver) is ever having a "rough day" with homeschooling - take the day off and pick up again tomorrow. You have the opportunity to not just meet the educational needs of your child but the emotional needs as well with the flexibility homeschooling provides - take advantage of it.
